All About Florence South Carolina

Florence is a beautiful town located in the heart of the Pee Dee Region at the I-95 and I-20 exchange. Florence has a growing population exceeding 30,000 residents and has become the medical, educational and industrial hub for twelve surrounding counties.  Here is a summary of some important historical events:.

In 1730, Robert Johnson, the first Royal Govenor of South Carolina, created 11 townships in the region with 22,000 acres each.  He promised every man, woman and child 50 acres if they'd settle in the territory and improve the land.

Welch settlers organized the Welch Neck Baptist Church in 1738 and it became known as the "Mother Church" of many other Baptist churches thoughout the Pee Dee.  Two of the oldest existing churches in Florence County are the Hopewell Presbyterian Church (1770) and the Ebenezer Baptist Church (1774).

Because of a growing lawlessness, the first system of courts was established in 1768 and P.H. Hatley was appointed the first sheriff.

In 1780, during the Revolutionary War, Francis Marion organized a militia and became known as the "Swamp Fox" because of his relentless attacks against the British in the swampy areas of the region.

Henry Timrod constructed a school in 1856-1857 to teach plantation children.  That school still stands today in Timrod Park in Florence.

The General Assembly of South Carolina created  the "County of Florence" in 1888 and named Florence as the county seat.  In 1890 the City of Florence was officially incorporated.
